Blackfoot tribal leaders from Montana and Canada have petitioned the U.S. government to cancel 18 oil and gas leases in the Badger-Two Medicine area near Glacier National Park. The leases cover more than 40,000 acres. The Tribal Business councilmen stated the leases were originally granted without consulting the tribes and without proper cultural or environmental review. One leaseholder has filed a lawsuit to lift the lease’s current suspension in order to begin exploration on a 6,200 acre tract.
